The leader of Chelmsford City Council has spoken up in favour of grammar schools.
Plans to end a ban on opening new grammar schools could benefit generations of Chelmsford youngsters.
The Prime Minister wants more selective state schools to be opened across the country saying it would promote social mobility.
The plans were formally presented to Parliament by Education Secretary Justine Greening on Monday, launching a consultation process.
Cllr Roy Whitehead said: "I came from an extremely modest background where both of my parents were factory workers. And I don’t think I’d be in the position I’m in today if I hadn’t attended a grammar school."
